Designed, according to tradition, by the official Senenmut, the temple rises in three colonnaded terraces set against a sheer limestone cliff, next to the older temple of Mentuhotep II.
Its reliefs record the divine birth of Hatshepsut and the celebrated expedition to the land of Punt, showing ships loaded with incense trees, ebony and exotic animals.
